How to open a .acsm file

Adobe Content Server Message · Ebook / DRM

An .acsm file is not your ebook. It is a small download token that Adobe Digital Editions exchanges for the actual book. Install Adobe Digital Editions, authorise it, then open the .acsm.

What a .acsm file actually is

When you buy or borrow a DRM-protected ebook, many stores and libraries hand you an .acsm of a few kilobytes. It contains a licence reference, not the book.

Adobe Digital Editions reads that token, contacts the content server, downloads the real EPUB or PDF and locks it to your Adobe ID.

Why it will not open

People expect a book and get a tiny file that no reader recognises. It looks broken and is not; it is a step in the process rather than the end of it.

Step by step

Windows

  1. 01Install Adobe Digital Editions, which is free from Adobe.
  2. 02Authorise it with an Adobe ID on first run. This step matters: without it the book cannot be unlocked, and using the same ID everywhere is what lets you read it on other devices.
  3. 03Double-click the .acsm. Digital Editions downloads the actual book and adds it to your library.
  4. 04The downloaded EPUB or PDF lands in your Documents folder under My Digital Editions, though it stays DRM-protected.

macOS

  1. 01Adobe Digital Editions has a macOS build and the process is identical.
  2. 02For library loans, the Libby app is usually far less painful than the ACSM route.

What usually goes wrong

Authorise before you open it

Opening an .acsm on an unauthorised installation can consume the download without giving you a usable book, and the token often only works once. Sign in with your Adobe ID first.

The token expires

An .acsm is typically valid for a limited window after purchase or loan. If it has lapsed, no software will help and you need a fresh one from the store or library.

Programs that open .acsm

Our pick, in order. Every one links to the publisher's official download URL and the SHA-256 hash of the installer, so you can check the file before you run it.

Common questions

Why is my .acsm file so small?
Because it is not the book. It is a licence token of a few kilobytes that Adobe Digital Editions exchanges for the actual EPUB or PDF once you open it with an authorised installation.
Can I open an .acsm without Adobe Digital Editions?
Not in any supported way. The token has to be redeemed against Adobe's content server, and Digital Editions is the client that does it. For library books, borrowing through Libby avoids ACSM entirely.
