How to open a .ai file
Adobe Illustrator artwork · Vector graphic
An .ai file is Illustrator vector artwork. Inkscape opens and edits it for free. Many .ai files are also valid PDFs, so renaming a copy to .pdf often lets any PDF reader display it.
What a .ai file actually is
AI is Adobe Illustrator's working format, holding vector paths, text and layers that scale to any size. It is what print suppliers and brand guidelines ask for alongside EPS.
Crucially, Illustrator saves most .ai files with PDF compatibility enabled, meaning the file is simultaneously a valid PDF. That single fact solves most "I just need to see it" situations.
Why it will not open
No operating system opens .ai natively and Illustrator is a paid subscription. Viewers that do show something often display only a low-resolution preview embedded in the file, which looks blurry and suggests, wrongly, that the file is bad.
Renaming it to an extension you can open will not help: changing the extension does not convert the file, it only changes what Windows tries to open it with.
Step by step
Windows
- 01To view it fast: copy the file, rename the copy from artwork.ai to artwork.pdf, and open it in any PDF reader. This works for the large majority of .ai files.
- 02To edit it: install Inkscape, which is free, and open the .ai directly. Paths and text come in as editable objects.
- 03To convert: in Inkscape use File, Save As for SVG, or File, Export for PNG at any resolution.
macOS
- 01The rename-to-.pdf trick works the same way; Preview then opens it.
- 02Install Inkscape, or "brew install --cask inkscape", for real editing.
What usually goes wrong
Rename a copy, never the original
If PDF compatibility was switched off when the file was saved, the renamed copy will not open. Keep the original .ai untouched so you still have the artwork.
Inkscape rasterises some effects
Illustrator-specific features such as certain gradient meshes and live effects do not survive the import cleanly. For print-critical artwork, ask the designer for a PDF or SVG export instead of editing the .ai yourself.
Programs that open .ai
Our pick, in order. Every one links to the publisher's official download URL and the SHA-256 hash of the installer. Once you have downloaded it, you can check the file against our index before you run it.
If you end up downloading one of these from somewhere other than the publisher, what you can and cannot verify about that is worth two minutes.

Common questions
- How do I open an .ai file without Illustrator?
- Inkscape opens and edits AI files for free. If you only need to see the artwork, copy the file, rename the copy to .pdf and open it in any PDF reader, since most .ai files are saved PDF-compatible.
- Why does renaming .ai to .pdf work?
- Illustrator saves files with PDF compatibility on by default, so the file genuinely contains a valid PDF structure alongside the Illustrator data. Any PDF reader can therefore display it.
