How to open a .dwf file
Design Web Format · CAD
A .dwf file is a read-only published version of a CAD drawing, meant for sharing rather than editing. Autodesk's free Design Review opens it, and it is deliberately not the editable source.
What a .dwf file actually is
Autodesk created DWF as the CAD equivalent of a PDF: a compressed, shareable snapshot of a drawing that someone can view, measure and mark up without owning AutoCAD.
It is a published output, not a source file. You are not supposed to be able to edit it back into a working drawing, and that is by design rather than a limitation to work around.
Why it will not open
Nothing opens it by default, and the viewer is a separate free download that Autodesk does not advertise prominently. People also often want the editable drawing, which a DWF is not.
Step by step
Windows
- 01Install Autodesk Design Review, which is free and made specifically for DWF. It handles viewing, measuring and markup.
- 02Autodesk's free web viewer also accepts DWF if you would rather install nothing.
- 03If you need to edit rather than view, ask for the original DWG or a DXF. A DWF cannot be converted back into a proper editable drawing.
macOS
- 01Design Review is Windows-only.
- 02Use the Autodesk web viewer in a browser, or ask for a PDF.
What usually goes wrong
DWF is not DWG
One letter apart and completely different in purpose. DWG is the editable AutoCAD drawing; DWF is a read-only published copy. If you were sent a DWF and need to make changes, you were sent the wrong file.
Why there is no download list here
We index 177 programs and none of them opens .dwf files, so there is nothing for us to publish a verified download for. The software named in the steps above is the right answer for this format; we simply do not have its installer on record yet.
Common questions
- How do I open a DWF file for free?
- Autodesk Design Review is free and built for DWF on Windows. Autodesk also runs a free web viewer that opens DWF in any browser with nothing installed.
- Can I convert a DWF back to DWG?
- Not usefully. DWF is a published read-only snapshot rather than the source geometry, so any conversion gives an approximation. Ask for the original DWG or a DXF instead.
