How to open a .swf file

Shockwave Flash · Legacy multimedia

A .swf file is a Flash animation or game. Flash Player was discontinued in 2020 and browsers removed it entirely. Ruffle, a free open-source emulator, is now the way to play one safely.

What a .swf file actually is

SWF was the format behind a decade of web animation and browser games. Adobe ended support on 31 December 2020 and built a kill switch into the final player, so even old installers refuse to run content.

The files themselves still exist by the million, which is why the question survives long after the technology died.

Why it will not open

No browser can play Flash. Chrome, Firefox and Edge removed the plugin architecture entirely, and the official player is both discontinued and deliberately disabled.

Renaming it to an extension you can open will not help: changing the extension does not convert the file, it only changes what Windows tries to open it with.

Step by step

Windows

  1. 01Install Ruffle, a free open-source Flash emulator written in Rust. It runs .swf files without any Adobe code.
  2. 02Drag the .swf onto the Ruffle window, or associate the extension with it.
  3. 03Most old games work. Complex ActionScript 3 titles are still incomplete, so some things fail.
  4. 04Never install the old Adobe Flash Player. It is discontinued, unpatched, and "Flash Player download" results are overwhelmingly malware.

macOS

  1. 01Ruffle has a macOS build and works the same way.
  2. 02The same warning applies: do not go looking for Adobe Flash Player.

What usually goes wrong

Flash Player downloads are a malware trap

Fake Flash Player installers were one of the most successful malware vectors of the 2010s and the sites are still there, now with nothing legitimate to compete against. Adobe no longer distributes it in any form. If a page tells you to install Flash, close the page.

Programs that open .swf

Taken straight from publisher manifests. Some of these handle the format for a narrow purpose rather than as their main job.

Common questions

How do I play a .swf file in 2026?
Use Ruffle, a free open-source Flash emulator. It runs SWF content without Adobe code, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Flash Player itself was discontinued in 2020 and disabled by Adobe.
Can I still install Adobe Flash Player?
No, and you should not try. Adobe stopped distributing it and built in a block that prevents old versions from running content. Sites offering it are distributing something else.
