How to open a .tax file

A .tax file is a TurboTax return, and the extension carries the year: .tax2023, .tax2024 and so on. Only the desktop TurboTax for that exact year opens it. There is no free viewer and no converter.
What a .tax file actually is
TurboTax saves each return in its own proprietary format, with the tax year baked into the extension. A file called return.tax2023 belongs to the 2023 edition specifically.
The format is closed and Intuit changes it every year, because the tax rules it encodes change every year. That is why there is no general-purpose reader, and why the answer here is narrower than for almost any other extension.
Why it will not open
You either do not have TurboTax installed, or you have a different year than the file. Opening a .tax2022 in the 2024 edition will not work: each version only reads its own year, and sometimes offers to import from the immediately previous one.

- 02Install the desktop TurboTax edition for that exact year. The online version cannot open a local .tax file at all.
- 03If you only need to read the return rather than edit it, look for a PDF instead. TurboTax saves one alongside the .tax file when you file, and that PDF opens anywhere.
- 04If you used TurboTax Online rather than desktop, the return is in your account, not on your disk. Sign in and download the PDF.

People asking this usually need to show a return to a lender, an accountant or an agency. That means a readable copy, not an editable one. The PDF saved when you filed does that job and needs no software at all.
Avoid "tax file converter" downloads
There is no legitimate tool that converts a proprietary TurboTax return into another format. Sites offering one are, at best, wasting your time with a file that contains your full financial identity.
