Which 7-Zip download should I choose?

The 64-bit .exe on a normal Windows PC. The .msi is for deployment tooling, and there are separate arm64 and 32-bit builds for those machines. Each has its own SHA-256 on this page.

Getting the right 7-Zip download

7-Zip is published on GitHub by its author, and that is the source this page points at. It matters because 7-zip.org lookalikes and ad-funded mirrors are common for a program this widely searched.

Take the x64 .exe for a normal Windows install. The .msi exists for deployment, the arm64 build for Windows on ARM, and the x86 one only if you are genuinely on 32-bit Windows.

The installer is small and complete, with no bundled offers and nothing fetched during setup. If a 7-Zip download you found asks you to accept extra software, you are not on the real one.

It does not associate .zip by default, on purpose

After installing, 7-Zip only takes the formats Windows does not handle unless you tell it otherwise in Tools, Options. People often think the install failed when double-clicking a .zip still opens Explorer. It did not.

The codes above belong to 7-Zip 26.02, the version in our index. If you have an older release installed, its code is different and this command will report that the product is not installed. In that case run Get-Package -Name "7-Zip*" in PowerShell to read the code of what you actually have.

This removes the program as the publisher packaged it. Settings and files created after installation, typically under AppData, are deliberately left behind by the uninstaller and have to be deleted by hand if you want them gone.
